What is WEEE

WEEE is electrical or electronic equipment that has come to the end of its ‘user life’ and covers a range of equipment. Those items that use electricity, usually connected via a plug or battery, are included in this category. Each year in the UK we generate 2 million tonnes of electrical waste, those items that are discarded contain a variety of materials, including metal, glass, plastics, ceramics and precious metals and because of this complex mix of materials without specialised waste processes can create a number of health risks.

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations

which came into force in 2007, were amended in 2013. It is one of the ‘producer responsibility regimes’, which means that producers are required to take financial responsibility for the environmental impact of the products that they place on the market, specifically when those products become waste.

We are a member of an approved WEEE compliance scheme, Recycling Lives Compliance Services Limited Approval Number WEE/XP3838PX/SCH.

Funds collected under these schemes are used to arrange free collection and recycling of the WEEE from the Local Authorities Household Waste Recycling Centres in the UK.

WEEE Symbols

The 'Crossed out Wheelie Bin' with Bar

All electrical and electronic equipment made after 13 August 2005 should display this symbol on the packaging or the product.

The symbol indicates that the product should not be disposed of with normal household waste but taken to a collection site for recycling.

Battery Recycling

This symbol is very similar to the one above but does not have a bar at the bottom of the bin. It was used on electrical and electronic equipment made before 13 August 2005.

This symbol will be re-introduced in order to support the Battery Directive which will shortly become part of UK law. The symbol indicates that the product should not be disposed of with normal household waste but taken to a collection site for recycling.
